Piano Tuning

If your piano has had a regular tuning and servicing schedule, a normal service call will consist of an inspection and assessment for any possible need for repairs, minor mechanical adjustments to keep everything in working order, and a tuning. With the exception of a few rare circumstances, your piano will always be tuned to concert pitch (A-440hz). If your piano has not been tuned within 2 years, a pitch raise tuning will most likely be necessary.

What is a Pitch Raise?

A pitch raise tuning is a preparatory tuning used when adjusting the pitch of your piano greater than 20 to 30 percent of a half step. This type of tuning also compensates for the elasticity of metal piano strings to reduce the amount of tunings necessary to bring your piano back up to pitch. It can be done just prior to a regular tuning, but it is better to schedule the follow up tuning at least a week apart to give the strings time to settle in to their new length. This ensures pitch stability, and your satisfaction.

Regulation

Regulation is an important part of your piano’s maintenance schedule. The action in a piano consists of thousands of parts made of various materials, all working in harmony to allow the pianist to interact with the strings. This is often referred to as a piano’s “touch”. Felt and wood wear out, and springs lose their strength. For a piano in good condition, minor adjustments can be made to each of the action parts to make sure that “the touch” is consistent across all eighty eight keys. For pianos which have not be regulated for many years, a complete overhaul of the keys and action may be necessary.

Professional Cleaning

Pianos can quickly accumulate layers of dust in it’s intricate inner workings. This dust will trap humidity inside your piano, exacerbating the problem of proper humidity control even further. If left long enough, it can cause early rust on the essential metal parts of the piano.  In far advanced cases, dirt, debris, and even animal nests, will hinder the working parts of your piano to the point where a tuning isn’t possible till proper cleaning has taken place.

Professional cleaning of your piano is recommended, as the mechanisms inside your piano are somewhat fragile. If you accidentally break these mechanisms when cleaning it yourself, the cost of repairs will often far exceed the cost of professional cleaning services. I can assess your piano’s condition and give you an individualized estimate for your needs.

Key Resurfacing

Having your piano’s keys resurfaced with a new set of key tops is a great way to revitalize the look and feel of an older piano. In some cases, it can increase a piano’s value by a decent margin. Your piano keys will go from looking like a badly damaged set of teeth, to a sparkling set of whites and blacks. Your kinesthetic experience will improve as well, since the surface of the keys will be uniformly smooth. It is best to schedule a full regulation immediately after resurfacing your keys. If you do so, your piano’s “touch” will be drastically transformed for the better.

While it is impossible for me to obtain new ivory, I may be able to repair or touch up a relatively intact set of ivories. If your ivory has simply come unglued and fallen off, I can repair it very easily. If it has broken off, it will be much more difficult, if not impossible to fix.

Consultations/Estimates

Are you thinking about buying a piano, and want to find out exactly what condition it is in? Are you unsure of the exact condition of your piano, or what kind of service it needs? Or, how much a service is going to cost for your piano’s individual needs?

For a minimum service fee, I will travel to any location within my service area and write up an assessment of a piano’s condition, and if desired, an estimate for any necessary repairs that are discovered. Locations outside my service area will be subject to a standard mileage charge.

PLEASE NOTE: I do not provide appraisal services at this time, only an assessment of the piano’s condition and an estimate for needed repair.
